US Navy ‘couldn’t believe’ extent of floods that hit south-east Queensland
The US Navy has notched its first day pitching in on Queensland’s flood recovery.
A total of 100 sailors from the USS Frank Cable arrived in Brisbane earlier this week.
Commanding officer Captain Albert Alarcon told Neil Breen sailors “couldn’t believe” how high the waters rose.
“We were surprised when we learned the entire area we were working had been submerged under approximately 10 feet of water.
“To see the level of recovery that has happened in just two weeks is probably even more remarkable,” he said.
The USS Frank Cable crew came to help Brisbane in a stroke of good timing, Captain Alarcon explained.
“We were conducting our routine patrol here in the western Pacific, and learning of the opportunity to support the local Brisbane community, … it was almost natural.
“When we presented the opportunity to the crew, the response was very positive.
“We’re continuing to the end of the week. In fact, our next group of roughly 50 people have made their way back to Mitchelton now.”
