Uvalde families lash out at school board, demand more security
Anger has boiled over at a meeting in Uvalde, Texas that lasted more than three hours as families refuse to send their children back to school.
Parents took out their wrath on school board members on Monday night following the release of a damning 80-page report on the response to the Robb Elementary School massacre.
Many said they will not send their children back to school without meaningful changes, including the firing of multiple employees.
While the school district’s police chief, Pete Arrendondo, was singled out by some, others called for every officer to be sacked.
The Texas House committee’s report, released on Sunday, accused officers of dithering outside the classroom where a gunman shot 19 children and two teachers dead.
“How am I supposed to come back here?” high school senior Jasmin Cazares asked the school board.
“What are you going to do to keep me from spending 77 minutes bleeding out on the floor, like my sister did?”
Texas police on Sunday announced an internal review into the actions of dozens of troopers present at the school during the 73 minutes before the gunman was intercepted.
91 state troopers were identified at the scene, outnumbering all Uvalde officers.
“You got 91 troopers on the scene, you got all the equipment you could possibly want, and you’re listening to the local school cop?” said Democrat state senator Roland Gutierrez.
