Venue owners light up the open line as Lord Mayor floats 24-hour city idea
An idea to transform Brisbane into a party city ahead of the 2032 Games has fired up venue owners today.
Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner floated the idea at the Queensland Media Club yesterday, calling for street parties, 24-hour trading and an end to lockout laws.
Discussing the idea with Sofie Formica, The Gresham Bar owner Andrew Baturo said the current lockout laws are too much.

“People finish work at all different times now,” he said. “The 9 to 5 afternoon drinking crowd has been dispersed.
“People in hospitality are finishing work at 11 or 12 o’clock and they’re getting penalised with rapid-ingestion drink laws.
“The bars are only open a few hours after those people finish work.”
Venues in safe night precincts are required to scan patrons’ IDs on entry after 10pm.
“On busy nights, it can actually take quite a while to get people into venues,” Mr Baturo continued.
“It just creates another psychological barrier for people to go out after a night out in the restaurants.”
Mr Baturo’s interview sparked a number of calls from other Brisbane business owners also wishing to weigh in on the laws.
Barry, who owns Brisvegas Cruises, told Sofie he’s constantly fielding noise complaints, even though he rarely conducts cruises past 10pm.
Barry Coonan: “We do some live band stuff, some blues cruises on Sunday afternoons. I wouldn’t be game to do one of them on a Saturday night.”
Sofie Formica: “It’s interesting because you can’t have it both ways. You can’t live in the middle of the city and expect it to be as quiet as it is in the middle of the country.”
Barry Coonan: “That’s absolutely right. There should be lots of activity in the city!”
