Wayne Bennett on his vision for the Dolphins and challenges ahead
Wayne Bennett has shared the challenges he anticipates ahead of the recruitment strategy for the inaugural team for the NRL’s newest club.
Joining the Dolphins as the head coach, he reflected on Wide World of Sports about how it was a different scenario than when he joined the Broncos as foundation coach back in 1988.
“I think the big difference for me as I reflect on it all, is we had a lot of ready-made players,” he told Peter Psaltis.
“They hadn’t played in the Sydney comp, but they were players that had given Queensland great performances in Origin at that point in time.”
Bennett isn’t downplaying the huge task ahead to recruit 30 players for the 2023 competition.
He predicts that the “majority of players would have played in the Sydney comp” but the challenge will be bringing them together to form part of the Dolphins Redcliffe-based team.
“Our judgement day is the first game that we play as a club, the Dolphins in 2023,” he said.
“That’s when our time will have to have it all together and ready to go on that day and become a club in the National Rugby League for the next hundred odd years.”
