An iconic Brisbane suburb is at risk of losing its character as highrise developments move in ahead of the Olympics.

Spring Hill is one of the city’s oldest residential neighbourhoods, with many of the houses dating back to the 19th century.

Its residents are scrambling to preserve its heritage amid concerns the suburb could soon be overrun by unit developments.

Spring Hill Community Group coordinator Dr Neil Peach told Sofie Formica while development is inevitable, it shouldn’t come at the cost of “uncharacteristic, neutral buildings stacked on top of each other”.

“We’ve looked at all the different plans that surround us … and we’ve resolved that we need to establish a vision within our community up to the middle of the 2030s.

“We can’t sit back and blame government – we need to have a view about what we think it needs to look like.”
