‘We need integrity’: Shadow Minister demands law reform to stop fake refugees
The monthly number of people claiming to be refugees in order to stay in Australia, despite having arrived by plane on student, work, or holiday visas, has nearly doubled since last year.
The latest Home Affairs report on asylum claims revealed that 1,786 people, who had arrived by plane on other visas, later applied for onshore protection visas in March 2023.
“Labor has done nothing about it and we need to change the law,” Shadow Minister for Immigration and Citizenship, Dan Tehan, told Ray Hadley.
“Over 80 per cent of these people are not refugees…We need integrity in our immigration system,” said Tehan.
