There are renewed calls for a royal commission into the treatment of veterans as thousands of returned servicemen and women are sleeping on the streets.

It is estimated around 3,000 defence force veterans sleep in homeless conditions each night, while the exact number of veteran suicides remains unknown.

Veterans 360 Australia, a charity which provides immediate support to homeless veterans, believes a royal commission into the treatment of returned veterans is necessary.

CEO and founder Jay Devereux tells Natalie Peters and Erin Molan his own homelessness inspired him to start the charity.

“For me it was terrible. My life had fallen apart.

“I went from having a four bedroom house, that was choc-a-bloc with modern stuff, to everything could fit in two bags.

“When we talk about veterans we need to be honest and open about the fact that these people experience things that life would not normally bring to them.”
