‘We need to do better to support men’: Julia Gillard’s suicide prevention message
Julia Gillard is calling for more support for men after research shows they are attempting suicide up to three times more than originally thought.
National suicide figures show that, on average, six men take their lives in Australia every day with 10,000 men attempting suicide annually.
But new research shows emergency services attended more than 30,000 cases of men who contemplated or attempted suicide between 2015-2016.
Former prime minister and Beyond Blue Chair Julia Gillard tells Ray Hadley men in their late forties and boys in there late teenage years are at a higher risk.
“It really is a wake-up call about how much we need to do to better support men.
“We’ve got to take the next step and empower people to have the right conversations… that are vitally needed.”
