A gloomy forecast isn’t dampening the excitement of fans and organisers ahead of the Ashes series opener at the Gabba.

There’s a chance of showers and storms forecast for the next three days, but a full house is still expected.

“Over the course of four days, we’ve got over 100,000 tickets sold, which is outstanding, particularly given it’s only Queenslanders who are coming along,” General Manager of the Gabba Mark Zundans told Spencer Howson.

“A week ago, we were really concerned we were going to lose a couple of days’ play.

“We also expect we’re going to get a fair bit of play in each day.

“We ask the fans to be tolerant of the weather and I suppose anticipate there will be some weather about.”

Listener Martin told Spencer Howson he thinks it will be a “marvellous day”, weather permitting.

“There is nothing like Ashes cricket.”

Queensland Cricketers’ Club CEO Lachlan Furnell told Sofie Formica the fridges are stocked in anticipation for the coming days.

“Over these next three days: 450 kilos of Mooloolaba prawns, 100 dozen Coffin Bay oysters – 280 kilo – and we’ve got this beautiful 280 kilos of grade three, 490-day grain-fed prime rib fillet from JBS Meats.

“Outside of that, 30 kegs per day, around 3,500 schooners and around 5700 glasses of wine every single day.”
