What had motorists trapped on the Bribie Bridge for hours today

There was no way onto or off Bribie Island for hours this morning after a truck broke down on the bridge.

With the Bribie Island Bridge having only two lanes, police were forced to set up a contraflow while the truck was dealt with.

Legendary radio newsreader John Knox told Bill McDonald he was one of many unlucky drivers caught in the fray.

“I was in it for about two hours,” he said. “I was heading home to Sandstone Point but I suddenly realised I was in traffic that I shouldn’t be in.

“At times, it wasn’t moving; mostly, it wasn’t moving at all.”

The dramas come just weeks after some Bribie residents grumbled about the prospect of a second bridge on a local Facebook page.

“A second bridge is necessary to accommodate the needs of the people who are on Bribie as a result of the first bridge,” Knox continued.

“As far as people are concerned, [that] it’s going to bring the riff raff and all that sort of stuff, … if that was going to happen, it would have already happened.
