The White House has warned of the possibility of biological or chemical warfare in Ukraine as Russia’s invasion continues.

In a series of tweets, White House press secretary Jen Psaki warned “we should all be on the lookout for Russia to possibly use chemical or biological weapons in Ukraine, or to create a false flag operation using them”.

She labelled a claim by Russia that the US biological weapons labs as “preposterous”.

Professor Alex Bellamy, the director of the Asia Pacific Centre of Political Science and International Studies at the University of Queensland, said the world was seeing a return to the old Soviet-era tactics, taking cities by “levelling them”.

“I think there’s nothing that isn’t a possibility and I think the US is playing a very good information game here, by sharing all of this information with us,” he told Scott Emerson.

“By sharing it, what they do is invalidate … the lies you get coming out from the Kremlin by sending out what we know they are going to do.”
