The Western Downs Mayor says his community is devastated following the shooting deaths of two police officers and a civilian at Wieambilla.

Four police were visiting the remote property over a reported missing person from New South Wales when they were met by a hail of gunfire at about 4.30pm on Monday.

Two police, aged 26 and 29, were shot dead and a third was injured. A neighbour was also fatally shot.

“The whole community is devastated,” Mayor Paul McVeigh told Spencer Howson. “Our community is absolutely rocked by the loss of lives.

“We’ve had young police officers going out, just doing their duty, and unfortunately, they don’t come home that night.

“A tragic situation and I’m sure there’s going to be a lot of grief and sadness as we move through this process.”
