Why a local MP took up the fight to crackdown on private parking operators

The Queensland government will close a loophole to stop private parking operators from accessing the private registration details of drivers.
The current regulations allow private operators to access registration details in good faith, when it is considered the first step to litigation after a parking invoice hasn’t been paid.
The action comes after a series of complaints to the transport office.
Greenslopes MP Joe Kelly was one of the first to raise the issue with the state government.
He says there has been a far bit of over-reach.
“Some people were contacting my office, and there were some people mentioning issues on Facebook and some personal contacts,” he told Neil Breen.
“There were things happening that just didn’t seem to be fair and didn’t seem to be right.
“I know (Transport Minister Mark Bailey) is a very fair person, I gave him a [ring] and had a chat.”

Traffic lawyer Andrew Wiseman welcomed the news that the loophole would be closed, as of Monday.
Asked about what drivers should do if they had already been issued a fine by a private operator, Mr Wiseman said it depends.
