Advocates for older Australians say rules allowing aged car staff to avoid isolation if they are close contacts should only be used in rare circumstances.

A framework approved by the federal Chief Medical Officer suggests adopting the policy when staff shortages would have a “high impact” on services.

Older Persons Advocacy Network boss Craig Gear told Mark Levy alternative arrangements should be considered.

“What would be better is to have a plan around the workforce so adequate, well-trained workers are still able to care for older people.

“[They are] at this time, particularly vulnerable to getting COVID-19 and we need to do everything we can to keep them as safe as possible but also connected to friends and family.”
