Why Labor is pushing to get PNG into the NRL
Labor is throwing their support behind welcoming a Papua New Guinean team into the NRL.
At their national conference this week, the party committed to looking at ways to get a PNG team into Australia’s national rugby league competition.
“I’m in favour of taking the game to Port Moresby,” says Michael McLaren.
Inner West Council Mayor Darcy Byrne is leading the push to get PNG involved in the NRL.
He tells Michael it’s an opportunity to build on our relationship with our nearest neighbour.
“We have a product here in Australia which the Papua New Guineans absolutely love, it’s called rugby league.
“The investment of time and resources into getting a PNG team into the NRL would be minuscule compared to the benefits that would come… and the real cementing of our relationship in the long term.”
He says the Australian government should provide the team with financial and administrative assistance.
