Why Queensland deserves to host the NRL grand final again
Scott Emerson says last night’s NRL grand final shows Queensland can stage the showpiece event and there’s an argument to hold it in Brisbane more frequently.
He says it’s time for the league to deliver for Queensland fans.
“Last night’s game was the first time in 114 years it was held outside Sydney – and that took a once in a century pandemic to make that happen,” he said.
“The NRL wants rugby league to be a national game – but it can’t be a national game if the grand final is always played in Sydney except in extraordinary circumstances like a pandemic.
“And the NRL is worried about the inroads the AFL is making into Queensland league heartland – one of the reasons given for an extra team in Brisbane.
“But surely holding the grand final in Brisbane more regularly – god forbid maybe each other year – wouldn’t it be a great way to continue to grow rugby league in Queensland?”
