Why Queensland’s ‘phenomenal’ popularity will continue for the foreseeable future
Queensland’s booming population will continue for years to come, demographers have predicted.
The latest population data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics shows that the sunshine state outperformed every other state.
The first full year of data during COVID up until March 31 shows Queensland’s population jumped up 0.9 per cent to 5.2 million.
Social researcher and demographer Mark McCrindle described the growth as “phenomenal”.
“It grew by more than all of the other states combined,” he said.
“This growth really is phenomenal … it’s Australians voting with their feet and heading to Queensland rather than any overseas migration.”
He said there were numerous factors, including many people now working from home.
“So now people can move to Queensland, which they always aspired to do, but their job was holding them where they were, they can actually take their job with them.”
He predicted the boom would continue, including when overseas arrivals would be allowed to return.
