Ray Hadley has slammed the state government for falling short on a child sex offenders “crackdown” in Queensland.

The Palaszczuk government is this morning spruiking new legislation to be introduced this week, which it says will be the toughest on paedophiles in the country.

Police monitoring periods will be doubled to keep convicted paedophiles watch lists for 10 years and repeat offenders for 20.

“The most serious recidivist child sex offenders will be monitored for their entire lives,” Police Minister Mark Ryan said in state parliament.

“The Palaszczuk government will always crack down on child sex offenders because Speaker, we will always put community safety first.”

Ray suggested that without also increasing sentencing periods, the move is “a bit like putting the cart before the horse”.

“I’ll tell you why I have a problem with it,” he said. “Pretty simple: where’s the penalties?

“Here’s the Premier of Queensland boastfully telling us we’re tough up here. Well, if they’re not in jail, what the hell difference does it make!?

“What’s the point of increasing the powers to monitor these creatures when we let them out in Queensland so quickly?

“If you actually increase the penalty, so that you’ve some hope of getting them locked up for a decent amount of time, … then maybe we can look at the laws that subscribe to monitoring these creatures.”
