Why some bird species are on the decline in greater Brisbane
There are real concerns some of Australia’s favourite birdlife are on the decline.
Scientists from Griffith University’s centre for planetary health and food security analysed two databases, to find out about populations in greater Brisbane.
They found some invasive species are driving out some native icons.
PhD candidate Carly Campbell said it appears some numbers have been dropping, including pale-headed rosellas, black face cuckoo shrike and galah numbers.
Although interestingly some introduced species are also on the decline.
“Cities are changing a lot over time, and everyone has noticed the change in birdlife around them,” she told Sofie Formica.
“Our research was really looking into what we can quantify what’s happening there.
“What we have found is some species are doing really well, to the detriment of some others, and some birds we consider our backyard buddies, we consider a ubiquitous part of our suburbs, are on the decline.”
As for the reason, it’s hard to say.
