Why ‘the bank of mum and dad’ is being blamed for worker shortages
Hospitality venues are being forced to shorten opening hours or close their doors due to worker shortages.
Social researcher Mark McCrindle told Sofie Formica parents continuing to financially supporting their children is removing incentive to gain employment.
“They’re staying in education later, so many don’t have that aspiration to work in these sectors of hospitality, tourism,” he explained.
“It used to be a generation, even if they were university students, they paid their way through uni and maybe wanted to pay for a deposit, but that has slipped from their grip.
“For their own sake, sometimes you need a little push out of the nest.”
