Why the Greens could nix government’s power bill relief plan

The federal government’s planned power bill relief won’t have a smooth ride through parliament this week.

While Labor’s focus is capping the price of gas, the Greens say they have concerns about the broader legislation package.

Coal prices will be capped by the NSW and Queensland governments but producers could be compensated for any shortfall.

The Greens say it’s unacceptable and could veto legislation if the compensation isn’t removed.

The minor party says resources companies are already making super profits and shouldn’t be given taxpayer money.

The government needs the backing of the Greens and independents to get the legislation over the line.
