There is growing support for a royal commission into the alarming rate of suicide amongst veterans.

New South Wales RSL President James Brown says the current official support system is a mess.

Former prime minister Tony Abbott released a paper on mental health care in Australia back in 2005 and is increasing his advocacy in the field since retiring from politics.

However he tells Alan Jones a royal commission isn’t necessarily the answer.

“A lot of people think that’s a good idea.

“Royal Commissions are very good at exposing problems.

“On the other hand, they don’t always come up with great solutions… if you look at the banking royal commission that we’ve just had.”
