Why you couldn’t watch the Golden Globe Awards on TV this year

The 79th Golden Globe Awards was a muted affair this year following a raft of stars boycotting this year’s event.

The red carpet, clutch of media members and lavishly-adorned celebrities was replaced by periodic updates from the Golden Globes website and social media accounts.

The decision to make the awards a ‘private event’ was announced just last week by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association after the voting panel was criticised for a lack of diversity.

Deputy Editor of New Idea Leigh Credlin told Spencer Howson it was revealed last year “they don’t have currently any black members”.

“Given the Black Lives Matter movement that’s currently gathering steam this year and last year, you can imagine that caused quite the controversy,” he said.

“Some celebrities were very, very outraged – Tom Cruise even returned his three Golden Globes he’s won.”
