The federal Social Services Minister has promised NDIS support for some Cystic Fibrosis (CF) sufferers.

Dan Tehan told Ray Hadley in a private conversation CF was not covered under the NDIS but has now conceded that’s incorrect.

The backflip came after a stern warning from Ray.

“I’ll go after your government with every fibre of my being. If you’re going to dud people with cystic fibrosis you’re not a good government.”

Mr Tehan says he’ll meet with the head of Cystic Fibrosis Australia to discuss the condition’s classification.

“Where the condition is significant and there’s permanent functional impairment or a permanent functional disability, they will.

“That decision is made by assessors… I’m advised there are around 48 participants in the NDIS who have identified as CF sufferers.”

The Social Services Minister has also urged anyone with evidence of rorting to come forward.

“Even though the scheme is to help those who need it most… there will be some people who sadly will seek to exploit it.

“But we’re aware of it, we’re cognisant of it, and we’ll be doing what we can to make sure that fraud doesn’t happen.”

Following the interview, Cystic Fibrosis Austalia CEO Nettie Burke phoned Ray saying she will meet with the Minister, but says she has demands.

“We don’t need somebody assessing them who has not a single clue about CF, because they will not understand what these people are going through.

“They need proper, trained assessors.”
