‘Worst possible start to 2025’: New Orleans aches following New Years attack
The US is reeling from a deadly terrorist attack in New Orleans in the early hours of New Year’s Day, while a second possible terrorist attack has unfolded in Las Vegas.
It has been alleged that an Army veteran driving a pickup truck rained down carnage on New Orleans’ famous New Year’s celebration.
At least 15 people have been killed and dozens more injured, as the driver steered around a police blockade and slammed into revelers before being shot dead by authorities.
US Correspondent for 9News, Johnathan Kearsley told Dean Miller on 4BC Summer Breakfast, ‘He drove past security, police cars, then around security fencing, if you could even call it that, and then straight onto the footpath.’
‘And then tragedy struck, at least 10 people were dead, 35 people injured. The death toll could climb, given there are still a number of people who are very, very seriously injured.’
‘This driver was then alleged to have opened fire on police before he was shot dead, leaving revelers running for their lives to essentially try and save themselves on what is supposed to be a happy, joyous night.’
New Orleans resident Cynthia Knutson told Dean Miller on 4BC Summer Breakfast, ‘Right now, we’re all just kind of in a state of shock.’
‘We’re trying to deal with the fact that so many people were killed last night on what should have been a beautiful celebration of the new year.’
