NRL star Greg Inglis has announced his immediate retirement from Rugby League.

The 32-year-old has been battling injury for several years now and has revealed he’s been “contemplating it [retiring] for a while now”.

The Rabbitohs captain called a media conference with club bosses and coach Wayne Bennett on Monday morning, officially bringing an end to his decorated career.

“This club has given me everything. I think it’s time and it’s the right decision for myself.”

Inglis played 263 NRL games for Melbourne and South Sydney, 32 State of Origins for Queensland and 39 Tests for Australia.

Rugby League great Johnathan Thurston tells Chris Smith Inglis called him for advice before making the announcement.

“What I said to him is ‘when I made the decision to retire I was happy and content with that decision’.

“He said, ‘I feel like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders… my body’s just let me down, I can’t go on anymore’.

“I think it’s going to be sad to see him finish like this.”
