‘You’re 21 and it’s a boy’s own adventure’: Veteran shares experience with PTSD
It’s estimated 1.5 million Australians suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder.
A condition which develops in people who have been through a traumatic event, PTSD triggers a set of memories which are accompanied by intense emotional and physical reactions.
Former Australian Test player and fast bowler Tony Dell is now helping those with PTSD, and he speaks from experience.
Having served in Vietnman, 40 years after returning from the conflict Tony was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress.
The diagnosis helped him make sense of the persistent and dark episodes in his life, and subsequent marriage breakdown.
He tells Alan Jones he had no idea how much his experience in Vietnam had affected him and was unaware of when he began to experience the impacts.
“You’re 21 and it’s a boy’s own adventure.
“You become anti-social. You don’t want to mix with crowds.
“And I didn’t find out all of this until I was diagnosed.”
